Organization Description
Most of the world's poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a start-up NGO in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.
We are growing quickly. In five years, we have grown to serve 70,000 farm families with more than 500 full-time field staff. In three more years, we will at least quadruple in size, while adding several new countries. Our approach has won widespread validation, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green and Skoll Foundations, and the global Financial Times/ IFC award for "basic needs financing" in 2010 and 2011. Job Description
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 4-6 years work experience for our program manager role, and demonstrated interest and experience in international development (i.e. 1 year+ living in a developing nation). They will serve in a career-track position that combines both field and management experience in Africa. As a young organization, we are ready to hand over large responsibility for specific, well-defined work modules, with similar structure to an operations consulting role.
Projects will be focused on improvements to One Acre Fund's program model - as opposed to day-to-day operations, which are operated by our country staff. The typical program manager leads several major projects, and several smaller ones - typically projects with higher degree of difficulty. Example projects include:
- Operations projects. One Acre Fund may set up a bean-seed production company, an area we have identified as a major humanitarian opportunity in East Africa. A program manager in Rwanda pioneered the protocols associated with starting a bean seed production company, and is investigating possible scale-up.
- Middle-management training series. As we rapidly expand our field operation, we need to recruit and develop a large number of middle managers. A program manager in Kenya developed a unified training series, rolled out some sample trainings with fifteen managers, revised, and worked with our Kenya director to deliver the trainings.
- Financial processes. We have a program manager who is leading up an effort to rationalize our financial processes. As a result of his work, we will now have monthly data on actual expenses vs. budget across all budget line items and three different districts. He will gradually hand this off to two office staff that he is managing. Having this data will lead us into the next phase of the work, which is to design and implement a wide variety of cost-cutting programs
This is a career-track role that is intended to eventually transition into a role such as country director, innovation director, etc. This is also a role that is eventually tracked to transition to "general partner", the core leadership group of One Acre Fund.
Qualifications
We are looking for somebody truly extraordinary for the program manager role. This is an extremely competitive posting for a business/ management-style position. Only 10% of applicants make it to a phone screen. Therefore, please do not respond unless you fit these criteria:
- *Demonstrated interest and experience in international development, requiring at least one year of living in a developing nation.
- *A willingness to commit to living in rural areas of East Africa for at least two years, minimum. This is a permanent, career-track role with no anticipated return to the US.
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume)
- Strong work experiences. Examples include professional work experience, or some kind of successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. starting a field program in a developing country, leading a conference, starting a business, peace corps)
- Leadership experience at work, or outside of work
- No ego or drama. We are all stable people who are fun to be around. We are looking for others that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service
- Nice to have: Kiswahili a plus, Kinyrwandan or French a plus. English required.
- Ability to cook/ laugh/ extraordinary patience - all desirable
** PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR PROGRAM MANAGER, IF YOU DO NOT FIT THESE CRITERIA. WE HAVE OTHER OPEN JOB POSTINGS AVAILABLE, SUCH AS PROGRAM ASSOCIATE. **
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Very modest, but enough to save some money after living expenses. However, raises come quickly for strong performers.
Benefits: Health cover, immunizations, flight, room and board. 2 annual home flights provided - home trips include some speaking and fundraising duties
Career development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews, and significant investment in career development. Although the post does not pay very well, your manager will invest significant time in your career development, and assist top performers with future placements in either the private sector or throughout the developing world.

Organization Description
One Acre Fund is a start-up initiative in Kenya which works with persistently hungry farm families. Instead of giving handouts to families, One Acre invests in farm families to generate a permanent gain in farm income. Our "investment bundle" includes education, financing, inputs, and export market access. Our program is designed to be usable by the extreme poor, and generates a permanent, 100%+ gain in farm income.
We have been operating since January 2006, and we currently serve 22,000 farm families (88,000 children). Our target is to change the lives of 50,000 families (200,000 children) within 18 more months, scaling at a 50-100% growth rate thereafter. One Acre Fund is one of the most externally-validated social start-ups of 2006, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green, Draper Richards and Skoll Foundations, and first place wins at the Stanford and Yale social venture competitions. Job Description
As One Acre fund expands, we are looking to hire the best development professionals in the world who have a desire to live in-field, in rural parts of Africa. We believe that the strongest current and former Peace Corps volunteers are a good talent pool to recruit from. So, we are looking for someone to travel to various African nations, to make contact with the Peace Corps administrators there (as well as with other NGOs), and selectively recruit new talent in those countries. We would then hire them for Kenya or Rwanda, our current countries of operation, when they become available.
At the same time, we are also looking to learn more about various countries around Africa. Having a staff person collect basic data from government offices would be useful.
We are seeking an exceptionally talented professional with very strong independent problem-solving skills, an ability to self-manage, and strong overall judgment. This person should also have strong networking ability, and the general stability/ability to deal with traveling alone for long stretches of time. The minimum commitment to this job is 2 years.
The recruiter/scout will:
- Travel to various African countries:
- There are approximately 26 African countries with an active Peace Corps office and/or relevant NGO offices.
- The recruiter/ scout would spend roughly 6 weeks covering a pair of countries at one time.
- Network with Multiple African Peace Corps and NGO offices:
- Make contact with Peace Corps offices, and other potential talent sources.
- Get recommendations from country directors and other managers on the best current and former volunteers.
- Proactively meet the current volunteers in-field, screen, and share information about One Acre Fund. Reach out to recommended former volunteers as needed.
- Gather basic data:
- Go to various government offices and collect basic data on various districts in the country.
Qualifications
This is a serious, full-time job – PLEASE DO NOT APPLY if you are having a mid-life crisis and just want to travel the world. You will have zero flexibility in choosing countries. This is a full-time job with defined deliverables, and you will travel to rural areas with very few exciting things to see. PLEASE ALSO CONSIDER the potential personal difficulty of traveling to 20+ countries in a single year, for a minimum of two years.
A successful candidate will have these traits:
- *Ability to commit to this position for a minimum of 2 years.
- *Must speak English with complete fluency. French is a big plus.
- *Serious, legitimate, and demonstrable long-term interest in international development work.
- At least one year of experience living in a developing nation. Former PCV is ideal.
- Very strong self-manager. As this position has no fixed work hours or in-person supervision, you must be able to reliably manage projects and deadlines with high independence on a day-to-day basis. We are looking for someone with a demonstrated ability to work independently. This is a professional role, and we are looking for a professional-caliber person.
- Demonstrated experience traveling in developing countries for extended periods of time. The person holding this position must be stable, resourceful and able to navigate through difficult situations by themselves.
- Top-performing undergraduate background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume).
- 2-4 years work experience in a professional environment.
- No ego or drama. We are looking for team members that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service.
Preferred Start Date: As soon as possible
Compensation: Competitive annual salary + health benefits + $50 travel per-diem to cover local food, housing, and local travel, plus all international transportation covered, including two flights home for personal leave every year. Bonus per candidate hired.

Job Description
Rapid organization growth translates into great career opportunities for our staff. We invest heavily in careers – we want to develop our next group of country directors, R&D directors, and partnership leaders. In their first year, our program associates lead 3-5 internal consulting projects, such as:
- Impact innovation: A program associate recently designed a new harvest storage product and farmer training, and tried it with a few hundred farmers. The trial demonstrated an increase in harvest profits by more than 10%. Next year, we expect to sell this product to over 40,000 farmers.
- Growth innovation: A staffer recently designed a new viral marketing initiative. She identified our best and most enthusiastic farmers, and turned them into volunteer "replication agents" who are empowered to recruit new groups of farmers. Our staff person designed the trial protocols, trained 10 field staff to test the idea, and observed the trial in-field, resulting in 25% higher client enrollment. We are now rolling this out across more than 200 field sites.
- Operations rotation: In addition to internal consulting projects, program associates also spend time paired with a regular "operating unit," which has 50+ staff. This is an opportunity to observe how regular operations work, while also building leadership skills by mentoring a larger number of staff.
In their second year, our strongest performers take leadership over a relatively independent pilot within the One Acre Fund network, while earning a significant and sustainable salary increase. Examples include:
- Burundi: One Acre Fund plans to launch one new country per year, for the next five years. A program manager moved to Burundi early in 2011 to direct field operations for an initial 400-farmer pilot. Six months later, that pilot is now being quadrupled in size and is our newest country launch.
- Farmers United: One of our program managers piloted an innovative trial in a new area of Kenya. This trial helps farmers to save up for farm inputs over time, in addition to taking loans, and has high potential to scale rapidly. Over two years, he has created a field organization of 80 staff from scratch. His organization, called "Farmers United," cooperates closely with our existing field units, but also operates with a high degree of independence within the One Acre Fund umbrella.
Career Growth and Development: One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through weekly mentorship and through regular career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions and countries. This results in fast career growth for our staff.
Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2 to 5+ years of work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for international development. They will serve in a career-track position that combines both field and management experience.
We are looking for truly extraordinary candidates that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale. This is not a short stint in Africa – this is a competitive posting for a career-track role. Only 3% of applicants make it to a phone screen. Therefore, please only apply if you fit these criteria:
- Strong work experiences. Examples include a demanding professional work experience, or successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. starting a field program in a developing country, leading a conference, starting a business, solid Peace Corps accomplishments).
- Leadership experience at work, or outside of work
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume)
- Humility and personal stability. We have a fantastic and likeable team. We are looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service
- A willingness to commit to living in rural areas of East Africa for at least two years - this is a long-term, career-track role. The ideal candidate will have at least one year demonstrated experience working in the developing world, although this is not a strict requirement.
- Language: English required in Kenya, and French required in Rwanda and Burundi. French-speakers are particularly encouraged to apply
- Ability to cook / laugh – desirable
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Starts very modest. However, this is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations.
Benefits: Health cover, immunizations, flight, room and board. 2 annual home flights provided.
Career development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews and constant feedback. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development.

Job Description
One Acre Fund relies on several key home-grown software systems to help us manage a lot of information. As we grow our organization to 50,000 farm families, with 500+ staff, across 2 (soon to be more) countries, we need to continually improve the features of these software systems. We have three key systems in Microsoft Access – client roster, books, and payroll – that help us to manage a wide variety of operations. Our roster tool for example handles the enrollment of clients, taking farm supply orders from them, tracking hundreds of thousands of payments, creating a wide variety of business intelligence reports, etc. As we are growing, we are also looking to scale our existing tools to a distributed database in the form of occasionally connected applications (OCA) using SQL server, with runtime Access as a front end.
The Technical Associate will initially be based in Western Kenya, with an opportunity to relocate to Rwanda as Technology Lead in the Rwandan country office. They will:
- Africa-facing mission-critical databases: Lead the continued development of mission-critical, custom databases that touch every aspect of operations. Assist with streamlining the databases between the Rwandan and Kenyan offices, and facilitate communication about IT issues between both countries.
- IT:Manage one Kenyan IT staff for routine computer maintenance and purchase, with potential for growth in number of staff managed. Assist Kenyan IT staff with Network Management using MS Server 2008 and Forefront Threat Management Server.
- Technology experimentation: Experiment with a variety of technologies (e.g. Frontline SMS, mobile phone reporting) to improve operations. Investigate appropriate solutions for database scaling.
- Mentor Kenyan staff: Work closely with the Kenyan Database Programmer and assist with their professional development.
- Other: There is lots of "Other" in a startup
Qualifications
A successful candidate will have these traits:
- Good programming skills
- Knowledge of database concepts and SQL, experience with SQL server a plus
- Very strong self-manager, very well-organized. After an initial six-month period of heavy mentorship, supervision will consist of 1 weekly check-in. We need someone who is very well-organized and can manage their work independently
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume)
- Work experience, or internship, in some professional environment - ideally 2+ years of work experience
- Willingness to commit to the position for at least 2 years, with ideally some experience living in a developing country
- Mentorship ability: this post will likely involve training and mentorship of local staff
- No ego or drama. We are looking for others that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service. Our expatriate team lives in rural Kenya together in a group of houses, and so we are looking for emotionally stable and happy people
- Cooking skills, high propensity to laugh and be happy: always desired!

Compensation: Entry-level nonprofit position
Benefits: Modest health cover, 2 annual home flights provided – home trips include some speaking and fundraising duties

Job Description
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 2+ years work experience, and a demonstrated long-term career interest in international development. They will serve in a career-track position that combines both field and management experience in Africa.
The work of One Acre Fund is increasingly of potential relevance to the policy of African governments. Our program work has started to earn us a seat at the policy table. We have begun jointly implementing work together with government. Further, our close relationship with farmers is also giving us new insights into particular policy items that we would like to help promote together with African governments. The overall goal of policy engagement is to find new ways to multiply our humanitarian impact, by helping as many farmers as possible.
We are looking for someone who will report mainly to our Rwanda country director (who primarily lives in rural Rwanda). This on-the-ground position will support One Acre Fund's policy work:
- Relationship management: This position will be responsible for making new government contacts, and helping to maintain a network of existing contacts among mid-level government managers.
- Country-level and regional policy agenda research: The East Africa government relations analyst will conduct research to support the creation of a well-informed policy agenda for our organization, for Rwanda, Kenya, and the greater region.
- Business development: This position may help with general business development. This will include networking with bilateral organizations such as USAID/ DFID, and targeted networking with other NGOs that are relevant to our work.
- Policy publications: One Acre Fund increasingly is gaining traction with well-respected policy organizations. For example, we have recently had significant mentions in pieces by WorldWatch Institute and in Foreign Affairs. This position will be responsible for research supporting the promulgation of our work among well-regarded publishers.
- Communications: This position will provide some on-the-ground and writing support for communications work, such as gathering and writing of farmer profiles, writing of six-month reports, some limited grant-writing work, etc.
Qualifications
We are looking for somebody truly extraordinary for this role. This is not a stint in Africa – this is an extremely competitive posting for a career-track role. Only 3% of applicants make it to a phone screen. Therefore, please do NOT respond unless you fit these criteria:
- Demonstrated experience and interest in international development work, including ideally at least one full year of living in a developing nation.
- Strong work experiences. Examples include a high-level professional work experience, or some kind of successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. starting a field program in a developing country, leading a conference, starting a business, solid peace corps accomplishments)
- Relationship-building and communications skills. Our organization culture is not necessarily looking for a slick salesman. We want a likeable person who is able to strike an appropriate balance between humility and confidence, speak intelligently about our program, and systematically manage relationships.
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume).
- No ego or drama. We are all stable people who are fun to be around. We are looking for others that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service.
- Required: English and French bilingual.
- Ability to cook/laugh/extraordinary patience – all desirable.
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Starts very modest. However, this is a career-track role eventually paying a real and livable salary for a long-term placement in developing nations.
Benefits: Health cover, immunizations, flight, room and board. 2 annual home flights provided.
Career Development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews, and significant investment in career development. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development.

In eight more years, we will multiply in size by 20-30x, while adding several new countries. To make that happen, we will need to raise an ambitious level of funds. We are seeking someone who can write, and eventually train others to write and manage writing.
One Acre Fund now has dozens of opportunities every year to write concept notes and proposals for funding ranging from $50,000 to $5,000,000. Historically, our founder has written many of these grants, and he is now seeking to mentor a grant-writer to respond to these requests. For this reason, we would love to meet someone who will live in rural Kenya where he is based for 6-12 months; after that the position is geographically flexible.
Responsibilities would include:
- Understand our core business intimately:We are seeking someone who is strong at writing, but also someone that has a strong business mind and can write about our work at the next level of detail. Today's funders do not just want smooth prose – they want business rationale. We would work hard to expose the writer to our program operations in depth.
- Write concept notes and proposals: We are seeking someone who will write concept notes and proposals for the organization. Key features of our writing:
- We do not just copy and paste, we tailor our materials to the funder. This makes the job more interesting as well – we are generally applying to more sophisticated funders, and our proposals are often very strategic and interesting to work on.
- We make heavy use of business rationale, tables and charts, etc.
- We emphasize clear logical flow in our writing.
- We often have heavy research in our writing, and we want someone who is good at research and/ or good at managing volunteers to do research.
- Write reports for funders: One Acre Fund values our current funders above all others, and works very closely with our top 15 funders. We keep them closely informed.
- Keep organized:We are not a boss-employee culture. We would like to hire someone who can manage their own work, and who does not need to be reminded to do things. This person should own the role.
- Develop to train others: In ten years, we envision probably having a writing staff. We are looking for someone that ideally could see themselves growing their career with the organization.

We are seeking somebody to work closely with the founder to provide administration support. Initial tasks would be similar to that of an executive assistant, but this is also a career path role. - Legal compliance: Tax filings, work visas, etc.
- Medical Support:Preventing malaria amongst staff (e.g. mosquito netting, spraying), ordering of drugs, arranging timely treatment.
Possible promotion to Administration Officer with good performance:
- Initiation of projects: Similar duties to the above, but an administration officer would largely anticipate needs, and initiate his or her own projects, proactively.
- Development of staff: An administration officer would invest significant time in the development of their staff. Example staff include construction manager, security manager, vehicle manager, assistant pool.
Possible eventual promotion to Administration Director with good performance:

Job Description
As we grow, One Acre Fund is seeking to add one new country per year to our operations. We are seeking the kind of person that can be dropped into a country with significant support financially and logistically, and can create from scratch a high-quality company in a very short time.
We are seeking someone who can do the following things:
- Create a strategic vision: This position does not involve managing an existing operation – we are seeking a entrepreneur who can create an operation, growing it from roughly 5 existing staff to hundreds. This involves a lot of strategic flexibility and independence. We are also seeking someone who is based in the field (in rural areas) at first, in order to craft a vision that results in the best possible customer service to farmers.
- Hire and develop staff: Our program directors will have to hire a lot of people, and more importantly, invest the majority of their energy in developing managers and leaders underneath them.
- Engage staff and lead: Our program model requires high tailoring to specific contexts. The program director will have to make decisions together with their leadership team by engaging them, and then lead them to execute a common vision.
- External and internal relations: We are seeking someone who will be a strong communicator both externally and also internally, together with fellow leaders in the organization.
Career Growth and Development
One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through weekly mentorship and through regular career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about.
This position would involve an initial 6-12 month training period in one of our existing countries of operation. Then the candidate would be posted to a new country, where we have roughly five existing staff. The mandate would be to grow that into a decent-sized company in a few years.
Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 4 to 8+ years of work experience, and a demonstrated long-term passion for international development.
We are seeking an entrepreneur who has previously grown an operation from scratch to hundreds of staff, or tens of thousands of customers, etc in a developing nation – And we want someone who wants to go back to scratch, and do it again, instead of managing a large existing operation.
- Likeability and humility. All of our country directors to date have grown up within our operation, learning directly from farmers in a start-up environment. We value humility and likeability, and wish to be joined by leaders that value the same.

Website: www.oneacrefund.org
Job Description
We are seeking a logistics officer who can manage all of our strategic purchases in East Africa. Our organization buys a lot of physical goods in several countries – these purchases are of high strategic importance, and we invest significant time and energy into these purchases. The logistics officer will be responsible for:
- Understanding our core business and needs: We want to find a colleague who is humble, has a "can-do" attitude, and is able to listen to our field operations and understand their needs.
- Innovating new purchases: We spend a lot of time investigating new kinds of things that we can buy. Oftentimes, these purchases unlock new strategic avenues for us to generate impact. Examples:
- Plastic dosing scoops – we recently custom-manufactured scoops that deliver a precise, 2.4g dose of fertilizer to a planting hole. This involved working with a plastics manufacturer and then field-testing the scoop in the field with actual farmers.
- Packaging for chlorine – we recently worked with a plastics manufacturer to innovate a new bottle for holding water purification chlorine, which could save us more than 50% on this item.
- Marketing signs – we recently discovered a new kind of marketing sign that is durable in the field, bright, etc.
- Building relationships with fertilizer and seed suppliers: We are still a small business in the grand scheme of things, but we are growing. This year we will spend about $5m USD on seed and fertilizer – but we will grow 20-30x in the coming eight years. We are seeking someone who will build and maintain relationships with a dozen different seed and fertilizer suppliers, and work together with them to save us millions of dollars on purchases.
- Research: This position will involve investing significant time and energy into research. Understanding fertilizer markets for example, requires cultivating key contacts who can feed data to us, and doing significant independent research into worldwide cost drivers. For various products, we also want to trace the supply chain back to original manufacturers in China for example.
- Transportation: It is not easy to get dozens of tractor-trailer-loads of items all over East Africa, across borders, etc.
- Leadership experience at work, or outside of work.
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume).
- Prior logistics experience is ideal (e.g. fertilizer purchasing experience), but mostly we are looking for someone with a strong business mind, who has a passion for operations and logistics. This job will involve a broad variety of duties, and so our ideal profile is a smart generalist.
- Humility and personal stability. We have a fantastic and likeable team. We are looking for passionate professionals that combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service
- A willingness to commit to living in East Africa for at least two years – this is a long-term, career-track role. The ideal candidate will have at least one year demonstrated experience working in the developing world, although this is not a strict requirement.
- Language: English required in Kenya, and French required in Rwanda and Burundi. French-speakers are particularly encouraged to apply.
- Ability to cook/laugh/extraordinary patience – all desirable.
Preferred Start Date: Flexible
Compensation: Starts very modest. However, this is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations.

We have been operating since January 2006, and we currently serve 12,000 farm families (48,000 children). Our target is to change the lives of 40,000 families (160,000 children) within two more years, scaling at a 50% - 100% growth rate thereafter. One Acre Fund is one of the most externally-validated social start-ups of 2006, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green and Draper Richards Foundations, and first place wins at the Stanford and Yale social venture competitions. Website: www.oneacrefund.org.
Job Description
One Acre Fund relies on several key home-grown software systems to help us manage a lot of information. As we grow our organization to 40,000 farm families, with 500+ staff, across 2 (soon to be more) countries, we need to continually improve the features of these software systems. We will also be building new computer systems, such as logistics management, in the future.
We are not necessarily seeking someone with a lot of programming experience, although that is a plus. We are more focused on finding somebody with long-term management ability who can understand the real business needs of our organization. We can train the software and technology side of things. They will start off doing heavy amounts of software development, but over time will hopefully transition into managing local staff in this task.
The Technical Lead will be based in Western Kenya. They will:
- Africa-facing mission-critical databases: Lead the continued development of mission-critical, custom MS Access databases that touch every aspect of operations. These include books, client roster, monitoring and evaluation, payroll – and kick-off development on new data tools such as logistics and inventory management. These systems touch many different field departments, and this is a great opportunity to build exposure to a wide variety of business processes
- IT:Manage one Kenyan IT staff for routine computer maintenance and purchase, with potential for growth in number of staff managed. The Technical Associate will be managing the IT staff, and will hopefully do as little actual IT work as possible.
- Technology experimentation: Experiment with a variety of technologies (e.g. Frontline SMS, mobile phone reporting) to improve operations
- Build a software team: Over time, there is a possibility of building a broader, local software team for One Acre Fund
- Other: There is lots of "Other" in a startup
Qualifications
A successful candidate will have these traits:
- Very strong self-manager, very well-organized. After an initial six-month period of heavy mentorship, supervision will consist of 1 or 2 weekly check-ins.
- Mentorship ability: this post will likely involve training and mentorship of Kenyan staff
Preferred Start Date: January 1, 2010 or earlier - as soon as possible
Compensation: Entry-level nonprofit position
Benefits: Modest health cover, 1-2 annual home trips to US
Career Development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews, and significant investment in career development. This post reports to the executive director, who will spend significant time in your career development, and assist top performers with future placements in either the private sector or in the developing world.

Development Director > Managing Director
- Wanted: Development Professional to lead fundraising efforts for rapidly-growing non-profit organization
- Location: Flexible within the US. New York or San Francisco preferred.
Organization Description
One Acre Fund is an award-winning, rapidly growing organization that eradicates hunger in East Africa. Instead of giving handouts to some of the poorest families in the world, One Acre invests in farm families to help them harvest more food for themselves. Our "investment bundle" includes education, financing, seed/ fertilizer, and export market access. Our program is designed to be usable by the extreme poor, and generates a 100%+ gain in farm income on every planted acre.
In three years, we have grown to serve 8,000 farm families (32,000 children). Our target is to serve 40,000 families (160,000 children) within two more years, scaling at a 50 - 100% growth rate thereafter. Website: http://www.oneacrefund.org/
One Acre Fund has a $1.8m-$2.0m annual budget in 2009. Most of our support comes from family foundations. We are seeking a development professional to support the Executive Director in growing and stewarding this current fundraising base, as well as work with the board to independently raise at least $0.5m+ in 2010, and $1.0m+ 2011.
Position Overview
One Acre Fund is an organization that can turn $120 into a life-changing loan that provides some of the poorest farm families in the world to grow their own way out of poverty. Although we earn substantial earned income from operations, our desired rate of growth requires us to aggressively grow fundraising.
We are seeking someone that will:
- Support the Executive Director in continuing to grow and steward our current funding base. The development director will play the lead role in stewarding our middle-sized gifts
- *Generate independent fundraising of at least $0.5m in 2010, and $1.0m in 2011
- Identify and independently win grants in the $10,000-$100,000+ range.
- Work with the Executive Director and board to provide some support on generating leads. We expect that the executive director and board will be able to help generate leads of roughly $0.2m per year, but it will be the primary responsibility of the development director to generate new leads independently.
- The development director will have overall responsibility for initial contact, first and second meetings, meeting follow-up, proposal writing, and reporting stewardship
- Limited support from a grant-writer posted in Kenya
- Develop over time into a “Managing Director” role, which implies a greater degree of autonomy and importance to the organization. From mid-2010 onward, all of One Acre Fund’s US operations will be solely a fundraising organization that we build. We are ideally looking for a person that can lead the long-term expansion of our US operations.
Qualifications:
- *Demonstrated ability and experience to generate new fundraising leads for international causes
- *Demonstrated ability and experience to independently land grants in the $10,000-$100,000 range for international causes
- At least one year experience as a development professional independently landing grants for international causes
- An ability to credibly discuss business concepts, performance indicators, etc with fluency – One Acre Fund is a results-oriented organization that primarily raises funds from savvy business people – we do not rely too heavily on the “bleeding-heart sell”
- Proven experience working independently, with minimum direction
- First year requirement: trip to East Africa for 2-10 weeks, to improve program fluency
- Strong writing ability and fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
- Strength and promptness in email communication
- 24-hour responsiveness to donors
- Willingness to travel around the US 20%-40% of time
- Ability to self-manage
- A sincere and real dedication to our mission
Preferred Start Date: August 2009 or earlier
Compensation: Competitive
Benefits: Health cover, 401k, vacation time
Career development: Quarterly management consulting-style career reviews, and significant investment in career development. This post reports directly to the executive director, but requires a fair amount of autonomy and independence.

- Very strong leadership and creative problem-solving skills, including ability to motivate others
- A willingness to learn PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, HTML / CSS, Drupal and Salesforce.com over time – your interview will include teaching you some of these basic languages, to see how quickly you pick up.

Challenging and exciting position in innovative start up NGO!
Excellent career development opportunity emphasizing management and leadership skills
Industry: Nonprofit/International Development
Function: Administration/HR/Communications/Donor Relations Employer: One Acre Fund
Job Title: Administration Associate
Job Location: New York City preferred (other US East Coast city possible)
Website: www.oneacrefund.org
Job Description
One Acre Fund is a rapidly-growing organization, and increasingly needs professional administrative support in the areas of communications, fundraising, HR and operations. Supporting these functions is integral in our growth plans and strategy.
We are seeking somebody to work closely with our small US-based staff (including the heads of our communications, fundraising, operations and HR/legal affairs departments) to provide support in a variety of areas, including administration, research and writing, various back office tasks, donor relations, etc. Initial tasks would be similar to that of an executive assistant, but this is also a career path role. We are seeking someone to eventually become an administration manager, and possibly a senior manager at some point. Example duties:
- General administrative support: The administration associate will be tasked with providing general administrative support to all US team members, including managing correspondence, calendars, travel arrangements, meeting and interview logistics.
- Research and writing: As a growing organization, we constantly need assistance researching a variety of issues including employee benefits options, issues specific to foreign-based workers, information on potential donors and funding sources, sector developments relevant to our work, sources of insurance for our clients and staff, etc. The administration associate would be asked to research these and other topics and present a concise summary of their findings.
- Talent search support: As our organization grows, we constantly seek to hire the world's best international development practitioners. To do this, we recruit talent from around the world and need support finding talented candidates, communicating with these candidates and efficiently moving them through the interview process. The administration associate would play an integral part in ensuring our talent search is effective and successful and would be called on to come up with innovative ideas on how to find the best talent.
Career Growth and DevelopmentOne Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through mentorship and through regular career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions. This results in fast career growth for our staff.
Qualifications
We are seeking exceptional professionals with 1 to 5+ years of work experience and ideally a demonstrated passion for international development. Therefore, please only apply if you fit these criteria:
- Strong work experiences Examples include a demanding professional work experience, or successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. leading a conference, starting a business, solid Peace Corps accomplishments).
- Internal drive The candidate hired for this position will often work by themselves, and, therefore, must be a self-starter and one who can proactively complete tasks without constant oversight.
- Leadership experience at work, or outside of work
- Top-performing undergraduate background (include GPA and test scores on your resume)
- Humility and personal stability We have a fantastic and likeable team. We are looking for passionate professionals who combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service
- A willingness to commit to this position for the long term This is a long-term, career-track role. We are looking for a candidate who truly enjoys all facets of administration and not a person who sees this job as an “in” to some other position with One Acre Fund. While this role has tremendous career development potential, candidates should not view this position as a starting point to gain a program role in Africa.
- Language English required; French would be nice to have
- Travel Limited travel in the US is likely and may increase to up to 10% depending on the candidate’s ability to support our recruiting efforts. Annual trip to Africa possible.
- Nice to haveWhile not a strict requirement, experience with website editing/updating, video editing and photo editing is a big plus.
