Women with children

Meet Christine, a widow with four children. She farms a half-acre of land by hand, using Bronze Age techniques, and yields only enough food to eat for eight months out of the year. During the rest of the year, "the hunger season," her family eats when they can. When food isn't available, they skip meals or drink thin flour porridge to survive. Severe, annual hunger caused her to lose one child, and two of her children are physically stunted from lack of food.

Christine has been left behind by most humanitarian organizations, who work with a "higher-tier" and easier-to-serve tier of the poor. Yet One Acre Fund works only with farmers like Christine. We deliberately seek out the most severely hunger-affected farm families, and continually strive to meet their multiple needs. We provide a comprehensive solution that makes it realistic for Christine to hope for more: a solution that recognizes all of the challenges in her life.

Christine is completely capable of increasing her food yields by 400% within six months, and eventually growing completely out of poverty. At One Acre Fund, we believe that Christine is capable of achieving a complete change in quality of life for her family. We help her to make that happen.
