One Acre Fund headquarters staff in Bungoma, Kenya recently created a Values Committee. The committee is tasked with helping our team live out our values in their work. This month we’d like you to meet Susan Njoki.

Q: Please tell me your name, your position at One Acre Fund and how long you’ve worked for OAF?
A: My name is Susan Njoki, and I have been working as a HQ treasurer for two years now.

Q: Why were you chosen as Hero of the Month?
A: I think the main reason for this is my way of relating with my colleagues at work. I also feel that hard work, professionalism, and time management could have added to me being chosen. I also have time for everyone who needs my help at work.

Q: What does being chosen as Hero of the Month mean to you?
A: It means a lot to me. I realize that people recognize my efforts. This motivates me to work even harder at my job in the future.

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: My job involves making payments to people, and this is my favorite part of the job. I try to make payments to as many people in a day as possible.

Q: Who is your personal hero?
A: I really adore Beatrice Macksallah, the human resources manager at One Acre Fund. This is because she deals with many people at the office and from the field, but she still manages to take care of all their needs. She has time for everyone, and she has never shut out or sent anyone in trouble away. I usually try to emulate her during my daily activities.

Q: What is your life motto or a rule you want to live by?
A: My personal motto is “hard work pays,” and I always try to live by this rule.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A:  I love githeri (mixture of maize and beans) and I usually eat this once a week. I came to love this food because my mother loved cooking it while I was young, so every time I eat it, I reminisce about my childhood.

Q: Where’s your favorite place in Kenya and in Bungoma?
A: In Kenya, I love the Maasai Mara because of the beautiful scenery and the different animals that you are able to see while there. The communities around there are very friendly and the food is great. In Bungoma, I love the One Acre Fund office because it is at the center of Bungoma town. Standing by the window you can also see all the activity happening around you.
